A Special General Meeting of the Friends of Orchestral Music (Cape Town) will be held at Artscape on February 22, 2016
The FOM Late Autumn Soirée at Old Mutual House is this year taking place on Saturday, 14 May 2016 at 5.30 for 6.00 pm. As you know this is a very well-subscribed event for which there are only 120 seats available. This year we are extremely
proud to be presenting a chamber concert with a difference in that the programme contains works that are not frequently performed in Cape Town. Moreover, we are very fortunate that we have secured artists of the very highest calibre including
David Juritz – former leader of the London Mozart Players – Bryan Wallick and Peter and Suzanne Martens amongst others. Amongst others since the programme calls for no fewer than 13 musicians: Rachmaninoff Vocalise scored for 6 cellos, his Cello Sonata and then the very lyrical Mendelssohn Octet which has been described as follows: “Its youthful verve, brilliance and perfection make it one of the miracles of nineteenth-century music”. This is going to be a superlative evening which will, as usual, end with a light supper and wine in very gracious surroundings.
The FOM annual quiz at the Glen Country Club has been scheduled for Monday, 15 August 2016. More details will follow soon.
FOM is delighted that for its Gala Concert on 3 November, it has been able to engage the brilliant and exciting piano virtuoso and Conductor Laureate of the London Mozart Players, British pianist Howard Shelley. Howard Shelley is not only recognised as a consummate musician, but he has done much to revive the very many almost forgotten romantic piano concertos of amongst others Moscheles, Herz, Hiller, Kalkbrenner and many others. Without his active promotion of near-forgotten works, the classical music repertoire would have been much poorer. It will be an occasion not to be missed. As pianist, conductor and recording artist Howard Shelley has enjoyed a distinguished career since his highly acclaimed London debut in 1971, performing with renowned orchestras around the world. He has recorded some 150 albums, all highly acclaimed and has appeared in several television documentaries, including Mother Goose, a documentary on Ravel which won a Gold Medal at the New York Festivals Awards. He has toured to Australia for thirty consecutive years, performing now as both conductor and soloist with the Melbourne Symphony, Adelaide Symphony and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra—with the latter he has recorded many albums for Hyperion’s Romantic Piano series. Much of his current work is now in this combined role with major chamber orchestras.
Howard Shelley will be both soloist and conductor at the FOM Gala and the All-Mozart programme will feature Mozart’s Symphony
No. 35 in D, K.385, the "Haffner" and the Piano Concerto No. 18 in B-flat, K.456, "Paradis" and the Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor,

The Friends will host a soirée at Old Mutual House on Sunday, 8 March 2015. The Friends of Orchestral Music will be hosting its annual late-summer soirée at Old Mutual House in Bishopscourt on Sunday, 8 March 2015 at 17.30 for 18.00. The programme is a very relaxed and romantic one with works by Haydn, Schubert and Beethoven. The artists this year number among the best that Cape Town has to offer: Francois du Toit, Magdalene Minnaar (nominated for a 2015 Fiesta award), Peter Martens, Maria Tien-Du Toit (who will be here from Holland for the concert), Patrick Goodwin, Paula Gabriel and others. Members of the Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Orchestra will open the evening. The concert will be followed by a light supper and wine will, as usual, be part of the offering. The price for the soirée is R380 per person and R350 for members of the Friends. As you will know, the venue can only accommodate 120 guests and the concert is usually over-subscribed so it is essential that you reserve your seats well in advance in order to avoid disappointment. You may do so by telephoning either Ruth Allen at (021) 794-2435 or Derek Auret at (082) 557-6566. I expect tickets to be sold out very quickly. The programme may be found here.
