Dear Music Lovers

We hope you are keeping well and warm.

The Friends of Orchestral Music are very excited to share the news with you that violinist Jordan Brooks  has been accepted to study at Chetham School of Music in the UK.  Jordan first came to prominence when he won the SAMRO National Music Competition at age 13. He has since gone from strength to strength under the tutelage of Anne-Marié Swanepoel at the Beau Soleil Music Centre as well as becoming the Concert Master of the Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. FOM donations assisted Jordan with bursary fees to the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival in 2019 where he performed in a number of the evening faculty concerts.  He also won the National Youth Music Competition in 2019 which FOM broadcast live on Fine Music Radio.

This coming Sunday he will be performing a streamed fundraising concert to say thank you to all his supporters and to fundraise towards the costs of his overseas studies. While he has received a full study scholarship, there are other essential costs that he needs help with.   The visa costs alone are in excess of R26,000 and FOM, through your generous donations, has been able to assist with R20,000 towards these costs.  Once his visa has been submitted he can then apply to be included in an upcoming repatriation flight due to leave at the end of August – the cost of which is not yet known.

If you wish to make a specific donation towards Jordans travels and other expenses, please do contact me and I will put you in contact with his family. However one excellent way to do this is to support his concert this Sunday.

Presented by the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra and their Youth Orchestra, Jordan joins his friends Tertia Visser and Gerhard Joubert on piano, Graham du Plessis on cello and Refiloe Olifant on violin.  They will perform works by Brahms. Sarasate, Vivaldi, Mendelssohn, Dvorak and Ponce.

Tickets are available from Quicket. To add to the buzz around the concert, Nic Barrow of Le Lude has given the CPO a magnum of 2012 Le Lude Cap Classique, valued at R1840 to raffle in Jordan’s honour.  Tickets for the concert are R75, R100 for concert and a chance to win the bubbly, and R50 for a magnum ticket alone.  https://www.quicket.co.za/events/108940-jordans-gift/#

We hope all FOM supporters keep well and safe and we look forward to being in touch again very soon. Please do contact me with any queries and we do hope you enjoy Jordan’s Gift concert on Sunday.

Kind regards
Louise Howlett
