Dear Friends of Orchestral Music

Invitation: Baroque to the Future & much more

Last year, with assistance from the Friends of Orchestral Music, the South African National Youth Orchestra (SANYO) held a strings course on Baroque music with specialist Erik Dippenaar. This proved so successful that they were invited to perform in the upcoming Klein Karoo Klassique in Outsdhoorn on 7 August.

Thanks once again to assistance given by FOM they are able to hold another course this week in Cape Town to prepare for the festival. This coming Thursday 4th August they will be giving a lunch concert at Rustenburg Girls High School and have extended an invitation to all FOM members to attend this concert so that you can see the incredible work they have been doing. The programme will showcase the expressive qualities of 18th century music. Erik Dippenaar, Artistic Director of the Cape Town Baroque Orchestra, conducts the recital from the harpsichord.  Entrance is Free.  The concert starts at 1pm at:

Rustenburg Girls High School, 44 Campground Rd, Rosebank, Cape Town.

Further into the month there are more youth events to enjoy – many of which have direct connections to your support through FOM.  The CPYO presents a concert on 13 August at Hugo Lambrechts, and smaller ensembles of the CPO development programmes will be performing in the Artscape Chandelier Foyer on 21 August. The CPO have the SA Conductors Competition on 7 August at Hugo Lambrechts, FMR have their Nussbaum Bursary Awards on 17 and 19 August at the Baxter and the Johan Vos Music Competition takes place at the end of August with the piano finals on the 31st at Hugo Lambrechts.

If you have ever wondered where your membership fees go – this month shows a glimpse of how much incredible work is happening to develop musicians of the future and Friends of Orchestral Music are a cog in the wheel.

Lastly, tickets are now on sale for the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra’s spring season starting 1 September. To book for the evening concerts – tickets are at Computicket or Artscape Dial-a-Seat. Once again we will be hosting the dress rehearsals on the morning of the concerts. Details below with links to tickets available from Quicket. All monies raised at the rehearsals go directly to helping the orchestra.

Kind regards

Louise Howlett
for Friends of Orchestral Music.
