August is not only woman’s month, but also a chance to celebrate youth in music.  The Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra’s Symphony Season opens this Thursday with a special guest concert featuring the German National Youth Orchestra, with conductor Alexander Shelley.  Please note there will be no open rehearsal for this, but we will be back to host the dress rehearsals for the rest of the season from 22 August to 12 September. Prices are R100 regular, (R80 FOM members) and R50 students with block bookings available for school groups.

For your diary – two of our FOM Beneficiaries host their premiere gala events this month which we hope will be of interest to you.

On 24th AugustHugo Lambrechts hosts their annual Concerto Festival. The Hugo Lambrechts Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Liam Burden will accompany 16 young soloists who auditioned earlier in the year and will perform in an exciting programme that varies from Bach to Stockton.

On 31st August The Beau Soleil Music Centre host their annual Gala Concert at the Cape Town City Hall.
Highlights of this year’s senior concert will be the Senior String Orchestra, directed by the Head of the Music Centre, Marina Louw, performing the beautiful Capriol Suite by Peter Warlock and the Senior Wind Band, directed by Head of Woodwinds, John Rojas, will close the concert with an exciting account of Traditions and Reflections by Lennie Niehaus.

If you are unable to attend the evening performance, the Junior Gala Concert takes place at 15h00 on Saturday afternoon and features the Preliminary and Junior ensembles as well as a performance by the celebrated Ifidyoli Ensemble, a product of their string development programme which received FOM funding from our orchestral development portfolio.  They will be joined by pupils of the Ottery Methodist School and the Westlake Primary School, where they also have community programmes.

Both concerts showcase the incredible work these centres do to uplift and develop the youth in our communities and give you, our members, the chance to see how you can make a difference by supporting FOM and our projects.
