Autumn Sunset Soiree 14 April ‘Best of Both’ – Gershwin, Debussy, Ravel, Ellington, Brubeck
8 Mar at 08:00 - 17:00
On Sunday 14 April, the Friends of Orchestral Music, in association with Bowmans, will host their first fundraising soiree for 2019 as part of their mandate to raise funds and awareness for orchestral music and musicians in Cape Town.
These glittering evenings take place on the 11th floor of the Bowmans’ Cape Town office, where guests will be greeted to a sunset drink overlooking the city, before settling down to a concert featuring some of South Africa’s finest rising star musicians.
The Autumn Sunset Soiree features the piano duo Francois Botha and Johun Chun, with guest saxophonist Dan Shout in a programme that showcases the diversity of these three talented musicians who use their classical experience to explore their love of jazz. Best of Both was a concept created by Francois and Yohun to explore the possibilities of performing classical and jazz music in the same programme, while striving to retain the authenticity and originality of each work they play. For our soiree they will join forces with one of the most sought-after saxophonists in the country- Dan Shout, to present a programme that celebrates composers who excelled in, and were influenced by both jazz and classical music. George Gershwin, Claude Debussy, and Maurice Ravel will be represented alongside jazz greats Duke Ellington and Dave Brubeck.
Thanks to the generous support of Bowmans, the Friends of Orchestra Music are able to bring you these unique evenings in order to raise much needed funds for the upliftment and development of orchestral music and musicians across Cape Town. It is the mandate of FOM to place specific emphasis on fostering the playing of classical music amongst the previously disadvantaged communities. All the soiree musicians chosen have been part of the projects supported by FOM and are now considered some of the finest of the new generation of classical musicians in South Africa.
